From the Diary of a Housewife, Jan. 1977
Maybe it was the time of that decade, and I was not a mother working outside the home...Yet. And here were my thoughts:
Did you ever have the feeling that you wee really crazy? And that you were the only one who knew it? And then you try to convince a counselor--"I'm Nuts!" I say, "I live within myself.
"I don't do my work well, especially if the kids are home and I get interrupted. If I get interrupted, I'm not working automatically, and forget where I left off. I cannot concentrate on this job. What is there to concentrate on? Vacuuming-- 'stroke forth, stroke back' Stupid! I have to dream. My mind cannot stay in this Stupid rut. Concentrating on vacuuming iis like concentrating on breathing--the difference is that I can breath and do something else. I cannot vacuum and do something else."
Oh, shit. Now I find I am not crazy. LIFE IS, and I'm on that stupid merry-go-round. People are starving, learning, weeping, dying, skiing, driving and skydiving...And I'm vacuuming.
